Privacy and cookie policy
How Chatty Maths looks after personal information on this website.
1. Who we are
Chatty Maths runs “Seriously Fun Games and Puzzles Workshops” for children aged 7 to 11, based in Buckhurst Hill, Essex. This policy explains how we handle personal information on our website, chattymaths.co.uk, including our free online maths games at chattymaths.co.uk/games/.
The person responsible for your information (the “data controller”) is Martin Green, trading as Chatty Maths, registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (registration number ZB829095). You can contact us at info@chattymaths.co.uk.
2. What we collect, and why
| When | What we collect | Why, and our legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| You visit our website | Technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you visit, and the date and time. Cookies and similar technologies (see section 5). | To run and secure the website, and to understand which pages are useful. Legitimate interests, and consent for cookies that are not strictly necessary. |
| You use our free online games | Nothing personal. The numbers you type, your guesses and scores stay in your own browser and are not sent to us. The games do not ask for names, emails, ages or photos. | We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the games. |
| You join our mailing list | Your first name, last name and email address, and a record that you agreed. | To email you about workshop dates and news. Consent, which you can withdraw at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email. |
| You book a workshop or send an expression of interest | The parent or carer’s name, email and phone number; the child’s name, age or school year; medical, allergy or special-needs information you choose to give; emergency contacts; who may collect the child; attendance; and photo consent choices. | To run the booking and keep children safe. Contract and legitimate interests; explicit consent for health information you give us. |
| You email or contact us | Your name, email address and what you tell us. | To reply to you. Legitimate interests. |
Information about bookings and children who attend a session is also covered by our Data Protection Policy and Terms and Conditions, which are on our Safety and policies page.
3. Photographs
We never publish photographs showing children’s faces. If you give photo consent when you book, it covers photographs of activities, materials and hands only. You can change your mind at any time by emailing us, and saying no has no effect on your child’s place.
4. Who we share information with
We do not sell personal information. We share it only with services that help us run the website and our workshops (these are called “processors”):
- Our web host (Bluehost), which keeps basic server records of visits, normally for up to 12 months.
- Google, which supplies the fonts our pages use (so it receives your IP address), Google Analytics for visit counts, and Google AdSense adverts on our free games pages.
- Brevo, which sends our emails and stores the mailing list.
- Cognito Forms, which collects booking and expression-of-interest forms.
- Automattic (Jetpack and WordPress.com), which delivers some site images and provides website statistics.
- YouTube, when you play the video on our home page (we use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode).
Some of these organisations process information outside the UK. Where they do, we expect them to protect it in line with UK law. We may also share information where the law or child safeguarding requires it.
5. Cookies and similar technologies
| Type | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Keeps the website working and secure. | All pages |
| Analytics | Google Analytics counts visits and shows which pages are used. It collects the pages visited, the approximate area you are in and the type of device. | Main website |
| Advertising | Google AdSense shows and measures adverts and helps prevent fraud. Adverts help us keep the games free. We never ask children to click on adverts. | Free games pages |
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the AboutCookies website explains how. You can manage Google adverts in Google Ads Settings and learn more at Your Online Choices. Parents and carers: if a child uses our games on your device, you may wish to check the cookie and privacy settings on that device.
6. How long we keep information
- Mailing list details: until you unsubscribe.
- Children’s records (booking, medical, emergency contact, attendance and consent information): 3 years after the child last attends a workshop, or longer if safeguarding requires.
- Financial records: 7 years, as the law requires.
- Server records: normally up to 12 months. Cookies last for different lengths of time depending on their purpose; your browser shows the details.
7. Your rights
You have the right to ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, to have wrong information corrected, to have it deleted or restricted, to object to how we use it, and to withdraw consent at any time. To use any of these rights, email info@chattymaths.co.uk.
If you are not happy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.
