Chatty Maths workshops are built on strong research principles that have the highest impact on learning:
- collaborative learning: +5 months*,
- motivation and opportunities to develop metacognition (problem solving strategies): +7 months*,
- small group tuition: +4 months*,
- elements of ‘mastery’ learning including use of manipulatives (hands on resources) and appropriate challenge: +5 months*,
- and play-based learning from the Early Year Foundation Stage: +4 months*.
*Number of additional months progress made, on average, by children who received the intervention regularly at school compared to similar children who did not – Education Endowment Foundation.
All ‘Chatty Maths!’ activities are developed on the principles of kinaesthetic learning – a learning style preferred by most primary aged children. Characteristics of our sessions and kinaesthetic learners include:
- Being highly active
- Preferring to be directly involved with the material they are learning
- Enjoying active problem-solving
- Liking to touch and manipulate objects
- Instantly accessible activities without long introductions and a low requirement to focus for long periods of time
In our structured sessions, whilst having fun, children will be able to…
- Gain a boost to self-confidence in maths and problem solving
- Hone their critical thinking and logical reasoning skills
- Develop the ability to connect maths with various subjects
- Engage in collaborative learning experiences with differing peers
- Cultivate a sense of curiosity and courage to explore new challenges
- Apply mathematical skills and build resilience to real-life situations and problem-solving
- Unleash their creativity within the realm of mathematics
But above all, we promise there will be a lot of fun!
I’m Martin, a dedicated math enthusiast who enjoys fostering children’s broader skills through innovative and fun learning approaches. In 2001, I earned my teaching qualification from Homerton College, University of Cambridge before moving to London to begin my teaching career. Since then I quickly rose through the ranks and served as a Primary Deputy Head across a number of schools. Possessing the all important Enhanced with Barred Lists DBS certificate and full insurance for Chatty Maths, I now operate my websites, supporting schools in assessment and overseeing training for new teachers entering the profession. We are also part of ICAP (Institute of Children’s Activity Providers) and we’ve received their highest quality assurance rating; three gold kites!
