- Logical reasoning and deduction
- Systematic elimination
- Place value: why the position of a digit matters
- Explaining your thinking with “because…”
Tips for parents and carers
- Start with the 3-digit codes. Four digits make a good challenge for Years 5 and 6.
- Ask “How do you know it cannot be 7?” rather than checking the answer straight away.
- Make your own codes on paper and clue them for a brother, sister or friend.
Using Code Breaker with a group or class
- Share your screen and give groups two or three minutes. Ask the children to keep a list of digits that are ruled out.
- Afterwards ask: Which clue did you use first? Which clue was the most helpful?
- Works for up to 12 children online with only paper and a pencil. Use breakout rooms or pairs, then bring everyone back to share their strategies.
